09 Plaster Production Molds Nº 312




I beveled some edges with the SurForm tool. Click on any image to enlarge it.






I used the paring knife and a small hammer to split the bottom mold piece.






I used the same tools to split the other two mold pieces.






The upper arm lifted right out. This is where I am always glad that I took my time with the clay build-up, getting it right on the parting line.






Some more beveling of mold edges.






I still need to carve a spare.

I removed the coddles, cleaned up the oil clay, and cleaned off the mold table. Click on any image to enlarge it.






After cleaning the mold table, I proceeded to start making another mess as I scraped the mold with the paring knife.

09 Plaster Production Molds Nº 310




I apply parting agent because plaster sticks to plaster. The parting agent I use is a 50/50 solution of water and liquid soap. I apply it with an old paint brush. Click on any image to enlarge it.






I mixed one pound of water and one and one-half pounds of plaster. Always add plaster to water.






I poured the plaster into the mold with the mold table vibrator turned ON.






I washed out the mixing container, tools, and my hands in the 5-gallon bucket of water. Excess plaster is put into the lined trash bin. Never put plaster (dry, set, or wet) down the drain pipes. I always let a freshly poured mold setup at least one hour before messing with it.

I clamped the coddles in place and pressed oil clay coils around them to secure them to the mold table, and to seal the seams.

09 Plaster Production Molds Nº 305




I made enough uninterrupted time to pour the second part of this mold. Plaster sticks to plaster. I applied a parting agent made from a 50/50 solution of water and liquid soap. Click on any image to enlarge it.






I mixed 28 ounces of water and 42 ounces of plaster. Always add plaster to water. I used the mold table vibrator when I poured the plaster. I washed my hands and the mixing container in a 5-gallon bucket of water. Never put plaster (dry, set, or wet) down the drain pipes. Having a lined trash bin, and a bucket of water prepared ahead of time takes a lot of the anxiety out of making plaster molds. I always let the mold setup for at least one hour after pouring. It usually stays there until the next day. One more part to make for this mold.

This mold half is ready to be poured, but if I don't have a large enough block of uninterrupted free time to pour the plaster, I don't like to apply the parting agent. So hopefully, tomorrow will be the day to pour the second part of this mold. Click on the image to enlarge it.

09 Plaster Production Molds Nº 302




First, I tried the coddles I used for the first mold piece, but they were not high enough. So I got out these coddles. After clamping the coddles around the mold piece, I secured it to the mold table with some coils of oil clay. These coils also seal the coddles against leaks when I pour the plaster. I've already carved the registration keys, so I must remember to apply parting agent before I pour. Click on the image to enlarge it.

09 Plaster Production Molds Nº 297




I did a little more scraping of this mold piece. There is this one place where the arm transitions to the ball joint that I think I'm going to have to carve out a little bit. I'm thinking about it. An alternative to carving the plaster would be to put a small piece of oil clay in there. If I did that, it would be something that I would have to trim once the part is slip cast. I'm leaning towards carving the plaster. Click on the image to enlarge it.

I am doing a lot of scraping on this mold piece. I am using my paring knife which has the rigid blade. For me, this is tedious work. So it might take me awhile to get it done. I mixed and poured the first part of the mold for the upper arm. I weighed 27 ounces of water and 40 ounces of plaster. Always add plaster to water. I used the mold table vibrator during the pour.
